Tour of Northern Morocco from Tangier | 10 Unforgettable Days in the Imperial Cities

We started the day with a guided tour of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, one of the world’s most imposing religious monuments, with its 210-metre minaret — the tallest on the planet — rising above the waters of the Atlantic. We then took the coastal road southwards, passing through a succession of extraordinary seascapes. Stop at el Jadida to visit the famous Portuguese Cistern, a jewel of Portuguese heritage in Morocco. We continued on to Oualidia, a small coastal paradise known for its oysters and tranquil lagoon. Panoramic views of Safi and arrival in Essaouira at dusk. Dinner and overnight stay in Essaouira.

A whole day to explore the ancient Mogador: the walled city, the Portuguese batteries overlooking the ocean, the bustling fishing harbour, the bastions and the craft markets where master marquetry artisans work with thuja wood. In the afternoon, you’ll have free time to explore its white- and blue-washed narrow streets at your own pace, buy local crafts or simply let the Atlantic breeze carry you away. Exit via the coastal road to Agadir, Morocco’s largest seaside resort. From the top of the hill where the ruins of the Kasbah stand, the view over the city and its kilometre-long golden beach is simply breathtaking. We visited the remains of the Kasbah, silent witnesses to the devastating earthquake of 1960. After exploring the city, we took the motorway towards Marrakech, the city of ochre. A day entirely devoted to Marrakech, the pearl of the south and a former imperial city. We begin with the majestic silhouette of the Koutoubia, which dominates the skyline of pink-tiled roofs, and continue on to the Saadian Tombs, the Bahia Palace — the former residence of Grand Vizier Ba Ahmed — and the Dar Si Said museum, which has been converted into a museum of decorative arts. The afternoon is devoted to the Jemaa el Fna Square, the beating heart of the city, with its storytellers, musicians and snake charmers. We venture into the dyers’ souk, the tanners’ quarter and the spice bazaar. Dinner and overnight stay in Marrakech.

We travelled through vast plains and vineyards until Meknès, the imperial city of Moulay Ismail. We visit the mausoleum of the great sultan — one of the most powerful figures in Morocco’s medieval history —, the imposing Royal Stables, capable of housing 12,000 horses, and the city’s magnificent monumental gates. After lunch, a brief stop at Moulay Driss Zerhoun, a holy city where the founder of the Idrissi dynasty is buried. Next, Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Morocco’s best-preserved Roman archaeological site, with its triumphal arches, mosaics and ancient temples. Arrival and dinner at your riad in Fez.

Get ready for a journey through time. The the medina of Fez, founded in the 7th century, is the oldest and best-preserved in the Islamic world. With your guide, you’ll venture into its 9,400 labyrinthine alleyways to discover the madrasas (Koranic schools), the ancient mosques, the Jewish quarter (mellah), the leather-dyeing workshops of the famous Chouara tanneries and the hustle and bustle of its artisan souks. We set off from Fez, crossing the majestic The Rif Massif until you reach Chefchaouen, the jewel box of Morocco. This charming town of Berber origin, perched amongst the mountains, is famous for its streets and facades whitewashed in endless shades of blue and white. Lunch in Chefchaouen and an afternoon at leisure to get lost in its corners picturesque corners, chatting with the local artisans and letting yourself be enveloped by its atmosphere that is both unique and peaceful. We’re back to Tangier to explore the town on the strait in detail. We visited the Cape Achakar, on the north-western tip of Africa, and the legendary The Caves of Hercules, where, according to mythology, the Greek hero separated Africa from Europe. Back in the medina, we strolled through the Grand Souk and Mendoubia Park, and had lunch at one of the historic cafés frequented by writers, artists and international travellers during Tangier’s golden age.
